Cream of the Crop

American Eagle Hooded Cardigan

Fall’s most desirable silhouette in knits are that of the cropped sweater. Suitable for all types of figures, they’re the perfect candidate for layering. Try pairing one with a long tee or tank and you’ll achieve a slimming effect all while feeling cozy without the need to wear a big, bulky coat.  Why not try American Eagle’s Sparkle Hooded Cardigan ($44, shown) on for size? It even comes with its’ own tank attached underneath!  With it’s neutral colors, it can be mix and matched with many different bottoms for a classic fall look.  Other cropped styles we adore are Bebe’s Curly Cardigan ($89); Mac & Jac’s Vintage Look Cardigan ($88); Shine’s Flyaway cardigan ($84); Aeropostale’s Friendship cropped hoodie ($22.50); and Calvin Klein’s bell-sleeve beaded cropped cardigan ($84).

What Not to Wear by Trinny and Susannah

When getting dressed for work or play…do find yourself second guessing what’s in the mirror? Are you unsure if that little black dress is actually to little for you? Maybe that bathing suit you have been hanging onto for years really should be hanging in someone else’s closet.  Well, don’t worry - there’s tons of help out there if you know where to look. Forget about asking your friends for advice, get the fundamentals you need on your own and be more confident in the process.  Get out there and grab a copy of What Not to Wear ($10.20).  Those British babes you’ve seen talking about magic knickers on Oprah have all you need to know in order to flatter your figure, look thinner and younger, and it’s all brilliantly packed inside one style changing book. Life’s too short not to look as fabulous on the outside as you are on the inside. Think of the book as a personal stylist that any true fashionista must read!!

Trinny & Susannah mania:    What Not to Wear on BBC UK.   The Rules DVD (UK).   Win a £10,000 spending spree with the Girls (UK, ends 10/31).   Shoe Selection 101.

Not your Mother’s Tunic

Marciano medallion fringe tunic

Tunics go with jeans as masterfully as peanut butter does with jelly. And it’s not a style that’ll be disappearing any time soon. Tunics in the ’70’s received a rather unfashionable rap and were pretty much limited to one shade, designed in terrycloth, available in sizes 16 and up only. Today’s tunic is akin to wrapping yourself in an ornate jewel and, with a little imagination, offers unlimited style possibilities. Why not try letting it double as a short dress and skip the jeans entirely? For the holidays, try replacing the jeans with a velvet mini. One great choice to begin experimenting with is Marciano’s Medallion Fringe Tunic (shown, $98) - a daring, vintage style you can flex, fold, tuck and layer whether you’re in a colder climate or one that’s a little more Mediterranean.  Another must-have is Lotta Stenson’s turquoise and gold stunner ($189), most recently worn by Jessica Simpson.   This Moorish Velvet Tunic ($98) is a great look for the holidays with its’ rich teal velvet and gold embroidery. And International Girls of Mystery will love this sequined style from Snob at ASOS - not to mention the 50% savings!  This vintage inspired sheer tunic glammed up with floral sequins at Shop Intuition ($85) is something we picture old school Hollywood starlets like Marilyn Monroe and Carole Lombard would’ve been wrapped up in. So many choices and so many ways to wear them all!  Make last year’s chenille fringe sweater a distant, bittersweet memory and try lightening up and layering with a beautiful tunic this season instead.

More fabulous toppers:     Charmeuse tunic.  Design History’s beaded sweater tunic.    Drape Neck tunic.   Eva Franco’s print bell sleeve style.    Ishmir Tunic.    Mink tunic (UK).

From Fleet Street to 12th

Twelth Street by Cynthia Vincent

A graduate of Otis Parsons School of Design and former head designer of London’s Jane Ong & Co., Ltd., Cynthia Vincent found her way back to Los Angeles and co-founded one super romantic clothing company known as 12th Street. Her fashions are designed to make women feel feminine, hip and confident. She once saw a fashionista at a local grocer who had paired Ms. Vincent’s boudoir jacket with a pair of Chloe pants, and a Balenciaga bag and loved how the woman put the outfit together and made it all her own. Cynthia stresses that mixing and matching one’s clothing to suit their personal preference is key and loves it when she see’s someone wearing a dress as a tunic or layering something in a way that’s in a style all their own. A winner of L.A.’s Rising Star Award and The Silver Thimble Award, Ms. Vincent’s line started just a year ago but is quickly zooming to the top of the fashion stratospheres, capturing the adoration of such celebrities as The O.C.’s Rachel Bilson. Shop the styles at fashion candy stops like ShopBop, Sun Walters and Bloomingdales.
