Emmy Hair how-to’s from Pureology
HAIR SHINED AT THE 60th ANNUAL PRIMETIME EMMY AWARDS

Wondering how to achieve the award show looks seen at the 60th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards?
PureOlogy’s PureArtist’s, Angel del Solar, Wendy Belanger, Darren Pena, Mary Katherine Hecht and Sherilynn Smart have the latest hair trends and tips so you can create the Emmy award show looks at home.
The top three trends as seen on the red carpet…
- Timeless waves as seen on Kyra Sedgwick, Terry Hatcher, and Brooke Shields (shown above)
Classic Chignon as see on Hayden Panettiere, Christina Applegate and Lauren Conrad
The low ponytail or bun worn by Julia Louis Dreyfus, Heidi Klum, and Marcia Cross
How to achieve…
Timeless Waves:
- Prepare the hair with PureOlogy HydrateShampoo and Condition to give hair the moisture it needs.
Cocktail NanoGlaze and StylingLotion together and apply to damp hair for control and shine.
NanoGlaze’s humidity resistant properties and shine enhancement in combination with StylingLotion’s medium hold power and shine enhancement gives the perfect combination to blow dry the hair for maximum control.
Begin blow drying hair with a medium to large round brush, directing hair away from the face.
Once the hair is dry, take 1 ½” or 2” vertical section and apply InCharge FlexibleStylingSpray. Use either a 1” or 1 ½” curling iron (depending on if you want larger or tighter curls). Continue taking vertical sections and spray each section with InCharge FlexibleStylingSpray before curling.
Pin each curl with a single prong metal clip.
Let hair curl for 20 minutes and remove pins. Cocktail ShineLuxe and NanoWax together and finger comb through hair to create beautiful waves.
For a smoother look on top with wave more toward the bottom, (like Tina Fey) use a cushion paddle brush through the top to create smoothness. Finish up with a final setting of InCharge FlexibleStylingSpray for a touchable feel and GlossingMist for more shine.
Classic Chignon:
- Prepare the hair with NanoWorks Luxury Shampoo and Condition for maximum shine, health, and manageability.
Next apply a cocktail of PowerDressing and ShineMax to wet hair for light hold and incredible shine. Blow dry from roots to end with a large paddle brush to give a nice straight blow dry.
Once hair is dry, apply DryShine throughout the hair for control and shine. Using a soft cushioned brush, pull all hair back into a low Ponytail and secure with elastic.
To achieve a fuller crown, back brush hair at the crown area with a small teasing brush before pulling hair into a low ponytail.
Brush the ponytail smooth and wrap it around itself and secure with bobby pins.
Finish off with InChargePlus FirmFinishingSpray for super hold and GlossingMist for shine. Leave a few pieces out around the face to soften the look, like Hayden Panettiere and curl them after lightly misting hair with SuperSmooth Hot Iron Protection Spray for a long lasting look.
Low Ponytail:
- Cocktail PowerDressing and NanoGlaze and apply to damp hair, blow dry hair smooth.
Create a center or side part and apply InCharge FlexibleStylingSpray all over. Pull hair into a low ponytail at the nape of the neck or off to the side.
Finish ends with a small amount of ShineLuxe.

How NARS top makeup artists glammed up the 2008 Emmy Awards

Tina Turnbrow, who created the Emmy look for Mary Louise-Parker
What was your inspiration for this look?
The look and feel of the dress, the shoes, the bag and knowing her taste helped me create this look!
Can you walk me through step-by-step how you created this look?
I used an oil-free moisturizer, eye gel and the NARS Sabrina Lip Balm to prep the skin for the makeup.
I started with NARS Balanced Foundation in Mont Blanc, then applied NARS Concealer and followed it with NARS Pressed Powder in Snow. I also applied some of the NARS Foundation Powder in Mont Blanc to the chest area. We wanted her skin
to have a luminous glow. She’s so fair and her skin has a very delicate, ivory quality about it that is so pretty.
I have her a beautiful hot pink lip using NARS Lipliner Pencil in Funny Face. After I lined and filled in the lips, I blotted and added a hint of powder to set the lipliner. You can use your finger or a Q-tip to achieve this look. Blotting
the lips after applying the lipliner created a gorgeous softness to the lips. I wanted most of the color in the center of the lips.
For her cheeks, I used NARS Blush in Desire and applied it the apple of the cheek. I then used the NARS Blush Brush to soften the edges of the blush.
For her eyes I used NARS single shadow in Tibet and for the crease I used the Duo Eyeshadow in Violetta. I also used the Eyeliner Pencil in London on the upper lash and smudged it out to create a soft cat eye. I also used NARS Mascara
in Black Orchid (the waterproof formula).
How would you describe this look?
I would describe this look as fresh, feminine and luminous.
How did this look compliment the star’s natural beauty?
She’s such a bright and talented actress and I wanted her look to reflect that. There was something so fresh about the colors used. There is a sexiness about her too her look was a combination of sweet and sexy.

Vanessa Scali, who created the look for America Ferrera
What was your inspiration for this look?
The look was inspired by the 50’s: an Audrey Hepburn eye, a Vargas mouth and a sheer, radiant face made it modern and timeless.
Can you walk me through step-by-step how you created this look?
Foundation/Concealer: I like the skin to look flawless but real so I always use foundations and concealers sparingly. That said, I prefer spot coverage for foundation. On America, I used NARS Balanced Foundation in Fiji and Barcelona (I
mixed two colors for the prefect match). I use a brush to apply it to the areas that need it and then I blend it in with my fingers. Using your fingers heats the product just a bit and leaves a seamless finish. Then I applied NARS concealer under the eyes where necessary.
Contouring: I used NARS Bronzing Powder in Casino to contour her cheekbones and accentuate her bone structure.
Cheeks: For extra staying power I used a combination of NARS cream and powder blush. This will make your blush last longer and require fewer touchups. First, I applied NARS Multiple Stick in Portofino to the apples of the cheeks. Cream formulas are my favorite. They are the easiest to blend and leave the most natural finish. Then after I used a touch of NARS translucent powder and then I applied NARS Blush Orgasm. The combination gave her face a touch of color and a subtle shimmer that left her looking radiant not made up.
Eyes: The eye is sophisticated yet innocent. First I used the NARS Multiple Stick Copacabana all over the eye lid. Followed by the right hand color in the All About Eve duo palette. All over the eye and under the bottom lashes. This layering help gives staying power. Next, I lined inside the NARS Eyeliner Pencil in Iceberg (white) to make them look bigger and I lined her eyes (upper lid only) with the NARS Eyeliner Pencil in Moon Black. Because mascara and lashes were very important to define the eye, I curled them and gave them several coats of NARS mascara in Black Orchid.
Eyebrows: I used Nars Ipanema brow pencil to fill in as needed.
Lips: Lips are bold and semi-matte. I used NARS Semi-Matte Lipstick in Scarlet Empress.
How would you describe this look?
Simple, sophisticated and timeless!
How did this look compliment the star’s natural beauty?
I kept the skin sheer to show off her flawless skin, her eyes simple but well defined and gave her a bold color on her lips to give her a simple and youthful sophistication.

Jill Cady, who created the look for Kristin Chenowith
What was your inspiration for this look?
My inspiration for her look was her dress and her beautiful eyes. Her dress is elegant and sexy; it called for sexy, strong eyes to compliment the look.
Can you walk me through step-by-step how you created this look?
I started by prepping the skin to make sure it was moist and nourished so the products would glide on! I started with the eyes. I primed the eyes first and then blended lighter shades first and ended by doing the lashes and liner. I then
applied the highlighter and base. I used cream blush to add color and contour the cheeks. I then set the skin with loose powder and ended by completing the lips and body makeup.
What products were used to create this look?
I used NARS Lip Lacquer in Chelsea Girl to create the luscious, sexy lip and I used NARS Blush in Orgasm for her cheeks.
How would you describe this look?
Sexy, classic and elegant.

There was a time when the words ‘weekend warriors’ filled our heart with dread, but that was because detention was sometimes held on a Saturday, thus the name. Not that we, uh … ever got detention or anything … But now weekends are for fun and maybe even travel. If you are getting away for the weekend, you can’t go wrong using one of these weekender bags:
Ed Hardy Jane Weekender - $148
Lets start with our new Ed Hardy Jane Weekender, which reminds us a lot of a bowler tote. We just love this bag because it has the iconic Ed Hardy tattoo print with jewel and sequin detail, making it by far the most unique and must-have weekender we have ever seen.
Urban Expressions Versatile Weekender - $62.00
If you love urban chic, this Urban Expressions Versatile Weekender is exactly what you want. Made from soft patent leatherette, it has contrasting gold zippers that are totally eye-catching. A great value for a bag that lives up to its name because of its versatility.
Giraffe Print Medium Duffle - $52.00
OK, so this is a duffle, not a weekender. But it is just big enough that it can be used overnight, or as a weekender if you travel light. Or if you are going to a beach-like destination where your clothes will be barely there, and therefore fit into a smaller duffle. Take your pick.
Yep, zippers are pretty big right now. We were wondering exactly when this trend would catch on. Ever since Jeffrey Sebelia won season three of ‘Project Runway’ with this stunning zippered dress:

… we thought they would catch on a lot quicker. But, better late than never!
Zip Around Hobo - $56.00
Our Zip Around Hobo will having you singing Zippety Do Dah in no time. This unique bag has zippers going all the way around, plus a zippered top closure, an internal zippered pocket and a small attached coin purse that also has a zippered closure. More zippers for the buck than you could ever imagine! And it is only $68, though if you order now during our limited-time sale, you can get the bag for just $56.
Nicole Lee Multi-Zipper Patent Tote - $72.00
The new Nicole Lee Multi-Zipper Patent Tote is just stunning. It has lots of small gold tone zippers that accessorize the bag and give it an edgy look that you will want to wear everywhere. It is a bargain at the regular price of $80, but buy now and get it for just $72. It is a large size and can even double as a quick overnight bag, so it is definitely worth every penny you will spend on it, and then some.
